Patterns of the Heart
Kiahna Dawkins, The Academy of Personal Leadership and Excellence, Teacher: Tracy Adams, 8th grade.
Digital Art
I find art making, peaceful and relaxing. I get excited when I put ideas down on paper. I enjoy creating works of art in my own style. I like to make creations that are personal to me, and I will more than likely have an art career.
The most challenging part was visualizing the image before I made it. It was hard for me to imagine because I was thinking about so many patterns. The website and its toolbars helped me overcome the challenge by giving me shapes to use. The shapes helped me decide how to put the perfect piece together.
I believe the work is successful because of the variety of pattern and color. It’s most successful because it has inspired me to use pattern in future art.

A Colorful World
Celine Mendez, MS390, Teacher: Rosanna Soriano, 6th grade.
Digital Art
"The difference expressing myself through art makes in my life is that I mostly get to draw my how I’m feeling and it really helps make a difference in my life because it helps me not bottle up my emotions and it makes me feel better by letting those bad emotions out and drawing makes me feel calm because I’ve been drawing for almost my entire life and I always had a attachment with it and sometimes art helps me escape from the bad things in this world and let’s me express myself.
The thing that was challenging about creating this piece was drawing the full body because I’m not used to drawing the full body to my artwork but I overcame this challenge by using references and sketched it out so I can draw the outline over the sketch but on another layer.
I think this work was successful because it turned out really well and I also think it is because of my art style because people have always complimented my art style and my drawings. Another reason I think this work was successful is because I did what I was supposed to do and listened to the steps and tricks that helped me do a great job at it and I’m really happy people enjoy my artwork it makes me feel so happy and when I get a lot of compliments about my work I sometimes blush and smile so hard. It also motivates me when people compliment my work."

"It helps me express something or someone that i see in my dreams or in life which makes me feel good.
One challenge that I had was trying draw the hair and I overcame this challenge by understanding how hair on a real person flows.
This work is successful because the of the details I put into the eyes and hair."

Blooming Minds
Erisbeth Gomez, Teacher: Dominique Martin, Bronx Dance Academy, 7th grade.
Marker, Watercolor, and Collage on cardboard
"I think that expressing yourself through art is a way to show your emotions, your inner thoughts, and also your creativity or imagination. People who see my art might be able to understand or imagine the story behind it, or maybe he won’t be able to and just see it as interesting and confusing. Also art can be expressed in many different ways through paint, dance, song, and even makeup.
What was difficult about this artwork was trying to imagine how it will all come together at the end, to see where i am going to start, to see what i am going to add, and to see what the story or meaning is going to be behind the art piece is it going to be a beautiful story or is it going to be a sad and riskful story behind it.
I think this work was successful because it was able to tell a story. It was able to show how something beautiful happened, something beautiful came out of the art piece. It tells the story of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr and how he was able to make a change and make something beautiful out of his bravery, risks, and how he wanted a change not just for him, but for everyone around him. That is also why I chose this piece to be named "Blooming Minds" because he wanted the best for everyone and what he did in order to be able to get to that place is a beautiful story."

Christmas Morning with Family
Hayrath Alassani, Academy of Persona Leadership and Excellence, Teacher: tracy Adams, 8th grade.
Digital collage
"Expressing myself through art allows me to explore new ways of being creative. When I create art, it really improves all the other areas of my life.
The most challenging part of creating this digital collage was selecting a background that would complement all of the details in my work. I overcame this obstacle by adding a neutral colored decorative paper, which makes this piece look amazing.
My work is successful because I put a lot of time and effort in adding some delicious treats to my collage. This work reminds me of the good times that I have with family during this holiday season."

"Art gives me freedom I don't have to follow a certain pattern. Art is your own thing it's like therapy it relieves stress and I really enjoy it. It adds color to my life.
The website was annoying. It was hard to control and I had to learn to use it as I was making the piece. It did not give me all the choices I was looking for. I overcame this by not giving up and I kept going.
I think it's successful. I like the color, the buildings and the details. The little car on the bridge reminds me of the Bronx. I live in the Bronx and this works reflects the city. In the end I was proud of the outcome even if it was stressful."

Brianna Rentas, The Bronx School For Law, Government, and Justice, Teacher: Kim Moye, 7th grade.
Acrylic on canvas
"When I express myself through art it makes my life more concentrated on one thing. And also a way to show how I feel.
Something that was challenging about creating this piece was putting details because if the color is light, and it doesn’t look good I would have to wait for it to dry and then try doing it again.
What I did to overcome this challenge was to stay imperturbable which means to be unable to be upset or excited just calm."

"Well the difference helps me show how I feel about certain things around me and things that I like.
Well I was having some difficulties with getting all the shapes to the right size and getting everything to the right shaded color.
I think it is successful because it shows how I truly feel about something’s and how happy I feel about it."

"It helps me practice and work hard at art.
It was hard understanding the meaning of a negative and positive theme in art. I had to think about something that was good so I came up with family and unity.
After I made the drawing, I blended one color at a time and made it look good."

"Expressing myself through art helps me be more creative and makes me happier. I would like to spend more time doing my artwork.
The challenging part was cutting the tessellation piece and figuring out what image to draw inside of it. I thought of a face from my favorite childhood show (Cyberchase) and that worked out perfectly.
I think this work is successful because I have worked hard on it and I followed all the criteria points."

"The difference expressing myself through art is that I can put all my emotions into one piece without having to say anything.
The most challenging thing about creating this piece was making the different shades for the fading trees. The way I overcame this was to just go with the flow and if it didn't turn out as expected then I will learn from my mistakes and try again.
I think this artwork is successful because I made it with my imagination and used my painting techniques to make texture in this piece. This was a painting I did with another medium which is watercolor."

Digital drawing
"When I express myself through art it makes me feel more confident and it allows me to show who I am as a person.
One of the challenges about creating this piece was adding the different values to the apple and making sure the details were positioned in the correct place.
I think my artwork is really successful because I was able to exaggerate the size of the apple and place it in an unexpected environment."

Watercolor, acrylic paint and pen
"Expressing myself through my art creates an explanation of how I feel and also shows the passion that I have for art. Art gives me an opportunity to speak and show my emotions through a drawing to others that might not understand me instead of verbally telling them.
As an artist, one thing that was challenging about creating this piece was creating the background. This was challenging because I was going to use watercolor but it wasn’t allowing me to achieve the darkest appearance that i wanted. When i realized this I switched to acrylic paint because i felt i had more control and larger variety of color options. This helped me a lot when making the details
I think this work is successful because I put my time, effort and emotions into this piece. The multiple details and experimentation and use of different mediums made my artwork as awesome as it is!"

"I think expressing my feelings through art is better than communicating verbally for me because it is a simple concept and process of using symbolic shapes to convey my feelings.
The challenges I had for this particular piece were limited materials. However, I tried my best to work with what I had, and have a nice balance of color.
I used a variety of colors to try and convey that you are in the cities, and you see all these bright lights, which tell you where you are. The outer cities and roads are to convey what you’d usually see in the area as well, sort of like the outskirts of the city itself. I thought this piece was successful because I put my mind to it, as well as putting the time and effort to make it work out the way I wanted it to. Hopefully people can
like it, as they can get a sense of my feelings from this drawing, as well as what each individual art section means."

The challenging part was for me was fitting images into the tessellation shape. I was playing my video game, and as I was playing, I said to myself, “This would fit!” So, I was inspired by my video game.
I think this work is successful because it looks successful. All the tessellation pieces fit and I followed the rubric."

"The difference drawing makes in my life is when I draw I have a feeling deep down, it’s like a warm light that makes me energetic and passionate about something but I don’t know what that something is, so I just grabbed a piece of paper and started drawing so let that electric feeling out and into my drawings so every time I finish that drawing I remember this memory with my sister when I and she would just sit down and draw together, she was always better than me and I would always complain about how bad mine is compared to hers but she would never brag about it she would just say that I need to practice more and keep drawing if I want to get better at it, So, in the end, I did just that and kept practicing. I know I have a long way to go until I get to be the skillful artist that I think about but I know I’ll reach it one day. So basically whenever I draw I feel happy and content with myself.
One thing that was challenging for me was being able to sketch out everything and all my ideas before I actually started drawing my final piece, I would always just come up with an idea then draw it without trying to develop my idea even more. I had to learn patients and learn how to make my ideas better.
I think that my drawing was successful because I like how the armor and the way I shaded everything to look, even though I think it could have been better I’m really happy with the way it turned out. It also taught me something new, to take your time thinking of a way to make your drawing better and taking your time in your drawings."

"Art fascinates me. It is fun and amazing to create artwork digitally. Expressing myself through art makes me feel creative, and it lets my imagination flow. I love having art in my life.
It was challenging to create the detailed images to go with a water scene, and then I came up with a bridge. I overcame my challenge by looking back on my trips to Puerto Rico and visualizing the island waves .
I think this work is successful because I put a lot of effort into this piece. This is one of the most important things I have created and I loved doing it. This project was challenging and exciting all at the same time."

"Expressing myself through art is about drawing my thoughts, and the things that I want to represent.
I didn't think it was a challenge, but the process I follow is thinking and memorizing, and looking hard all around the room to catch what it
looks like, the place where I do remote learning.
To me it is quite successful because I almost got all of the details in the whole room."

"When I express myself through art, I am always able to put my thoughts down on paper. When I draw I let out my emotions. When I express myself, I am not as stressed out.
When I started doing my art piece, I felt as if it was going to take ages to complete. I thought I wasn’t going to finish it. At the end, after spending many hours on my piece, I got it done.
I think my work is successful because my tessellation piece was able to fit into itself and because I created two different designs to place inside the shape."
