Abstract Still Life
Valentina Timal Montes, Crescent Elementary School, Teacher: Dianne Giuliano
"I want people who look at my artwork to see how hard I worked to make this picture. I want them to feel that I tried my best. I want people to like my artwork and I want them to enjoy looking at it.
I think my work is good because I took my time to make it. First, I practiced drawing a realistic still life. Then, I made an abstract still life. I put lots of colors and shapes. I really like the colors I used to make this picture.
I like to make art because it makes me happy. When I do artwork it makes me feel better when I am lonely or sad."

"When people see my artwork I want them to feel as if they are in the picture. I want people to feel the air flowing around them. I want people to think they can be where this picture is.
What were some choices you made to change or revise the piece?
I think my work is good because I take my time to finish my artwork. I put a lot of effort into my work. This picture has a lot of color and I worked hard to make it look like it has dimension.
I like to do art because it is relaxing. Art helps me to keep focused and it keeps my attention. I am never bored when I do art."

Markers, pencils, colored pencils, tempera paint - on paper
"I want them to feel happy – I wanted to show my culture from Ghana in Africa. This art is a combination of Minnie Evans and African Masks.
I think this work is good because it shows the work of African Artists of the past reflected in my own style. I worked on the drawing, erased and repaired lines, and changed some colors.
I like to make art because it makes me feel calm and peaceful and happy – I also learn about the world and people through Art. Being able to create art makes me feel proud of myself. When I show other people my art, they are learning about a part of me."

Cardboard, oil pastel, and pencil
"When people look at my, work I feel like my artwork is complete because it took a long time to make it. When I finished it I felt like I accomplished something. Also, people who look at my work make me feel like I achieved something in art.
I think my work is good because I worked hard in this mask and I got inspired by our artist of the month Kimmy Cantrell and by learning about masks from Africa. The choice I made is to add details on the sides of my mask and I added all types of colors to make my mask interesting. And I added layers of cardboard to make it look more 3D and then I glued it.
I like to make art because its relaxing to me and because I like coming up with different designs to create lots of different things in art that I think people will like and enjoy."

Cardboard oil pastel and pencil
"When people see my work, I want them to think I’m talented and I want them to feel surprised about it.
I think my work is good because I tried to be very creative. For my designs I work hard to make good shapes, good layering, and good coloring with oil pastels. And I did good gluing too. I want to be in the Bronx Art Festival. When I finished my mask I decided to add the long pieces of cardboard around top to make my mask look more decorated. I like it like that.
Why do you like to make art?
I like art because I can create the designs I want to make. And I can do whatever I want on my mask like make it asymmetrical or symmetrical."

Cardboard oil pastel and pencil
"When people look at my artwork I want them to think about the variety of colors and shapes that blend and go well together. I also want people to think about asymmetrical pieces in my artwork. I also would like people to think about where I got this inspiration from.
Why I think my work is good is because of the colors that I blended into my artwork. I think this because I included some of the cultural colors people use in Africa, like red, green, yellow, and white. Some changes I made to my artwork was add more layers to the pieces to revise the artworks.
I like to make art because I get inspiration from different artists. I also like to make art because I like to create my own art that people can get inspiration from one day. I’ve gotten great inspiration from African art."

Arlenis Paulino, P.S. 226X, 5th grade, Teacher: Geraldine DeHaugoubart
Cardboard oil pastel and pencil
"When people look at my work, I would like them to see that I worked hard on my mask and used different materials. I like working with the oil pastels because it makes the artwork really colorful and makes people want to look at it. I made my mask using the modern colors of grey, white and black so that my mask would have a theme.
I think my work is good because I used different shapes on the mask, and used the different oil pastel colors to blend my colors. I used the artist Kimmy Cantrell to help me model my artwork, especially the nose on the mask, because it made the artwork look very unique.
I love art because it makes me feel really creative and calm. I like to use what I learn in school, at home when I draw and paint. I also love coming up with my own ideas, but I try to use the different artists we learned about to help. I also like using the oil pastels because it makes my artwork stand out and be unique."

"I want people to think that my work is good and that I worked hard to make it.
I think my sculpture is good because it is my dog that I care so much about and I did a lot of work to make it. Some choices I made were to make a mat, a bowl, and a bone.
I like to make art because you can make art with different materials and your work doesn't have to be about just one thing."

pencil and crayons on paper
"I want them to think that a good artist made this work. I want them to feel that the animals are really standing there.
I thinks this art is good because it has a lot of details, and I really worked hard on it, and it came out really good.
I put the wate buffalo near the front of my picture, and then I put another one in and I made sure that it wasn't too close to the first one. I also wanted to make the background dark, but I added the flamingo to make the color "pop".
Making art always inspires me. I know that all the kids like making art, but I find it inspirational!"

"I want people to feel happy and enjoy how the colors mix on the paper.
I think the work is good because of the colors and a black leaf it made. I kept adding more and more colors and they mixed together on my paper.
I like to make art because I can move the paint and colors by myself. I like to give the pictures to my Mom."

I like making art because I can express myself and when I am creating I feel freedom that makes me happy."

Markers, pencils, colored pencils - on paper
"I want them to feel excited and think that it’s great. I would like the art that I create to make people feel something. Whether happy or sad, I like to get people interested in what I make.
I think this work is good because I did a lot of details, but I want to change and grow like a great artist. I added bright colors to reflect a feeling and mood. I always love adding more and more to my work to make my art more interesting. I also think I’m good at drawing people, and I have my own style.
I like to make art because art is amazing and fun. It takes away all of your trouble and makes life better. Every time I am in art class, I always make many artworks and I feel that I never want art class to end. Making art helps me feel good about myself because I like sharing my work with others. Art is great!"
